Are email and app sign-up discounts worth it?

When a brand has no public code, a welcome offer is often the best deal going. Here's how to use them without drowning in marketing.

Typical welcome offers

Examples we checked on brand sites in October 2026:

  • Email or text sign-up: 15% at Under Armour and Gymshark; 15% off online at Kohl's for joining its texts.
  • App: $10 off for new UNIQLO app members; ASOS's app-only first-order code.
  • Loyalty schemes: 15% off your next purchase for joining The North Face's free XPLR Pass; Nike Members get a birthday-month offer.

Doing it without the spam

  • Use a separate email address or an alias for shopping sign-ups.
  • You can unsubscribe at any time: UK and EU data law requires consent for marketing emails, and US law requires an unsubscribe option.
  • Text programmes may charge standard message rates; reply STOP to opt out.
  • Save the welcome code for your biggest planned order: it's usually single-use.

When it isn't worth it

If you're buying one cheap item, a recurring stream of marketing messages may cost you more in impulse buys than the discount saves. And if the brand has a better public code or a student discount you qualify for, use that instead; welcome codes rarely combine with other offers.
